Project LATEST UPDATE (8-17-08)
We would like to thank those
of you who have chosen to volunteer your time and expertise to
participate in this year's QCACHMM
CHMMunity Project. This year’s project involves assisting
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) by assessing school laboratories and
chemical storage areas.
To help make this project a
success we are providing the following information to assist you
in your volunteer efforts.
Each school inspection will be conducted by a team of two
QCACHMM participants. The current sign-up sheet has been provided
to CMS. QCACHMM participants will be
contacted by the respective school contact identified on the signup sheet to
schedule the inspection at a time convenient for all parties.
We again
wish to thank you for your participation in this project. Our chapter
members should take great pride in this effort to reach out and make a
difference in our community.
For anyone interested in signing up for some remaining school locations, please review the
current sign-up sheet and contact Christina
Field as soon as possible.
If you have
any additional questions about this project or need further informtion, please don’t hesitate to contact Christina
Field.
UPDATE (7-24-08)
Dear QCACHMM Subscribers,
As mentioned in previous chapter meetings, the Queen City
Chapter has been considering a CHMMunity* project involving the
Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. I
am very happy to announce that the project is now ready to launch.
PROJECT SUMMARY:
- The national
ACHMM encourages local chapters to get involved in their respective communities
to promote environmental, health and safety and proactive management of
hazardous materials.
- Queen City
Chapter participants have expressed an interest in applying our professional
expertise to local EHS-related community needs.
- A variety of
projects were considered, one of which is to partner with Charlotte-Mecklenburg
Schools (CMS) to address chemical hygiene concerns in school laboratories.
- CMS has implemented
a written chemical hygiene plan which requires periodic inspection of school
laboratories; however, CMS resources for conducting these inspections are very
limited.
- Queen City
Chapter participants are interested and available to conduct the laboratory
inspections and provide a report of their findings to CMS.
- CMS will use
these findings to develop corrective action plans for individual schools and
implement solutions for systemic observations.
In order to initiate the project, the chapter recently
hosted a sign-up session which was well-attended. There are still additional opportunities for
participating in this chapter project.
Participants who sign-up to conduct an inspection will also receive $10
reimbursement towards the cost of fuel for traveling to the selected school.
If you were unable to attend the sign-up meeting and if
you would like to participate, please email christina.field@goodrich.com
with your choice of the following CMS high school(s) and your contact info
(email address and/or phone number) by July 31, 2008.
West Charlotte West
Mecklenburg Olympic Campus Garinger Campus South
Mecklenburg Harding Providence East
Mecklenburg
Northwest Berry Vance Waddell Butler Ardrey
Kell Mallard Creek Hawthorne
The school locations can be mapped at the following link: http://maps.co.mecklenburg.nc.us/gp/
I will send out additional information to all those
signing up which will include the CMS chemical hygiene plan, inspection
checklist, instructions, and school contact information. Participants will then be contacted by the
respective school contact (science department chairperson) to schedule the
inspection at a time convenient for all parties.
If you have any additional questions, please don’t
hesitate to contact me.
Regards,
~Christina Field
