Dear QCACHMM Members and Fellow EHS Professionals, As mentioned in previous chapter meetings, the Queen City Chapter has been considering a CHMMunity* project involving the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system. I am very happy to announce that the project is now ready to launch. PROJECT SUMMARY: The national ACHMM encourages local chapters to get involved in their respective communities to promote environmental, health and safety and proactive management of hazardous materials. Queen City Chapter participants have expressed an interest in applying our professional expertise to local EHS-related community needs. A variety of projects were considered, one of which is to partner with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) to address chemical hygiene concerns in school laboratories. CMS has implemented a written chemical hygiene plan which requires periodic inspection of school laboratories; however, CMS resources for conducting these inspections are very limited. Queen City Chapter participants are interested and available to conduct the laboratory inspections and provide a report of their findings to CMS. CMS will use these findings to develop corrective action plans for individual schools and implement solutions for systemic observations. In order to initiate the project, the chapter is hosting two sign-up sessions where chapter participants will be able to meet the safety director and high school science curriculum director for CMS, learn more about the inspection process, and select the school(s) at which they would like to conduct inspections. Two meeting times are being offered to accommodate busy schedules. Participants may attend either a lunch meeting or an evening dinner meeting. Meals will be provided for all attendees, and participants who sign-up to conduct an inspection will also receive appropriate PPE and a $10 pre-paid credit card towards the cost of fuel for traveling to the selected school. Both meetings will be on July 22 for approximately one hour as follows: Lunch Meeting 11:30 AM at Villa Antonio, corner of South Blvd and Woodlawn Dinner Meeting 06:00 PM at Froehling and Robertson offices, 2505 Hutchison-McDonald Rd (north Charlotte, off Cindy Ln from Statesville Rd) Please RSVP by July 11 to christina.field@goodrich.com indicating which meeting you will attend. Thank you and hope to see you all on July 22. ~Christina Field *More information on ACHMM’s CHMMunity Outreach Program can be found at: http://www.netforumachmm.org/EWEB/DynamicPage.aspx?Site=061128ACHM&webcode=re_chmmunity |
