1/25/2005  Chapter Meeting

If you were not at our first meeting, you missed a good one.  We met at the Open Kitchen in Charlotte.

Alex Almaguer gave a very interesting presentation called "Responding to a Hexavalent Chromium Spill at a Nuclear Power Plant".   This event occurred at Oconee Nuclear Station about two years ago.  It was amazing how this happened and the massive response it took to protect employees and get the Chromium dust cleaned up.

I have been looking for restaurants in Charlotte that have meeting rooms.  I will be having some board meetings and probably chapter meetings at other restaurants to "test" their facility.  The consensus was that the Open Kitchen was a good place to meet.  I would like to find several locations so we have a variety.  Bottom line, since we are the Queen City Chapter, we should be meeting in the Queen City.

Meeting minutes have been posted on our web site as well as our 2005 Operational Plan.  I have also listed all of our 2005 meetings on our meetings calendar so mark your calendar and plan to attend.   Attendance Records have also been posted.  Be sure to check periodically to verify your attendance records are correct.  Let me know if you have any questions or problems.

Dues

Dues this year remain at $25 and are due by March 22, 2005, the date of our next chapter meeting.  Ten members paid dues at the first meeting, so if the others could get this taken care of quickly, we won't have to mention it again.  You should pay our Treasurer, Margot Rott.  You can pay her at the next chapter meeting or mail dues to her at:

Margot Rott
Catawba Nuclear Station
4800 Concord Rd. (CN04EM)

Membership Drive

Last year we had 19 chapter members.  I feel that this is too low.  With an industrial area the size of Charlotte, I believe we should have 100 members.  One of our initiatives for this year is to increase chapter membership by at least 5 people.  I realize this is small, but that would be a 30% increase!  In order to accomplish this, we form a special committee to pull together a list of 100 companies in the Charlotte and surrounding areas that should have hazardous materials personnel who would be interested in the CHMM certification and our local chapter.

John Williamson (Immediate Past President) and Mike Phillips (Board Member) agreed to head up this project and I also agreed to help.  Additional volunteers were solicited from the Chapter at the 1/25 meeting.   Giorgina Franklin, Christina Field and Annie Richardson graciously agreed to help with this project.  This group will be getting started soon.  If you are aware of any companies we should include, please send me a note.  Also, if you can get coworkers interested that's another way of increasing membership.  Word of mouth is the most effective way to get people interested.

Web Site

Please remember to check our web site frequently.  Information and new links are always being added.  Plus, if you have not already done so, please begin using the discussion forum.  I plan to begin using the polls feature soon to get feedback from you.  As mentioned at the last chapter meeting, on of our goals is to submit our web site for national recognition at the upcoming conference.  So please begin using this valuable tool.

Next Chapter Meeting

Our next chapter meeting will be on Tuesday, March 22, 2005 at 6:00 p.m.  An announcement will be sent out around the first of March and a reminder the day before.  The board is working on several potential speakers for later this year and maybe a tour.  Until the next meeting, I hope you have a safe and productive month.
