December 15, 2007
Welcome to the Final Newsletter of the Queen City ACHMM Chapter for 2007.
I hope everyone is having a nice Christmas season and isn’t getting too
stressed out!
First of all, I would like to THANK everyone who came out for the November
13 meeting. We had a tremendous turnout, twenty (20) members and our
speaker. That is the best turnout I have seen since I became a member in
late 2004. We met at Buca Di Beppo in Pineville where we had a wonderful
meal and a refreshing presentation on Hazardous Waste from Mr. Mark Burnette
of the Hazardous Waste Section of the Mooresville Regional Office of NCDENR.
I apologize for the room confusion, however, it didn’t dampen the evening.
The remainder of this Newsletter will be a Year In Review for 2007 to bring
everyone interested in the Queen City ACHMM Chapter up to speed on the
progress of the Chapter.
1. Membership – Our initiative was to increase paid membership by five (5).
We accomplished this initiative by making a presentation on our Chapter to
the Environmental Council of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce
Manufacturer’s Council and by mailing out letters to CHMMs in the Charlotte
area not previously solicited. I am proud to say we picked up seven (7) new
members in 2007.
2. We developed Short-Term and Long-Term Goals for the Chapter and posted
them on the website.
3. We posted the Chapter’s Mission Statement on the website.
4. Corporate Sponsors – We successfully retained one corporate sponsor for
2007, Allied Waste. As a corporate sponsor, we have posted their logo on our
website and given them a link to their website. We would like to THANK
Allied Waste for serving as our Corporate Sponsor in 2007 and we look
forward to a long lasting relationship with them.
5. Amend Chapter By-Laws – We revised the Chapter By-Laws and submitted them
to the National ACHMM to review. They approved our revisions and we
distributed the revised by-laws at the November meeting. We will vote to
ratify the revised by-laws at the first Chapter meeting of 2008.
6. Federal Tax Status – We decided to apply for the federal tax exempt
status as we felt it would aid us in soliciting Corporate Sponsors. We
completed the lengthy application and submitted it to the IRS in August. As
of December 1, we have not received a response from the IRS other than our
application has been received and given to a case-worker for review.
7. CHMMunity – We have developed several ideas for CHMMunity projects.
National ACHMM provides five hundred dollar ($500) grants quarterly for
CHMMunity projects. We have decided to apply for a grant and are looking
into a couple of leads for 2008. So, keep your volunteer hats ready! We hope
to use your expertise in 2008!
8. 2008 Board of Directors
- President – Christina Field
- Vice-President – Giorgina Franklin
- Treasurer – Annie Richardson
- Secretary – Margot Rott
- Director-At-Large – DeWhitt Whitten
- Director-At-Large – Mitzi Stewart
- Director-At-Large – Josh Hartmann
- Immediate Past President – Stuart Kerkhoff
9. Chapter Member of the Year 2007 – Mr. Mike Phillips
Mike earned this prestigious award for the countless hours and diligent
work he put into completing the VERY LENGTHY IRS Federal Tax Exempt
Status Application. Your efforts are applauded.
So, without further ado, I sign off as President of the Queen City ACHMM
Chapter after having an excellent year. I want to thank everyone for
participating in the Queen City ACHMM Chapter for 2007. I hope to see
everyone in 2008!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Stuart Kerkhoff
