March, 2008

The time is flying by and we’re already looking at Easter. It seems like Christmas and New Years was just yesterday. I hope everyone had a great holiday season and that your new year has launched successfully. The new year looks very promising for our chapter with several exciting events planned, including tours of the National Whitewater Center and the Jacobsen-Textron facility located near Carowinds.

Please take note of the following points of interest.

  • Chapter meeting held on February 4, 2008. This was a joint meeting with the Tarheel Chapter of the ASSE. Please see meeting minutes for details of the meeting.

  • By-laws have been revised and approved by National ACHMM. The revised by-laws are posted here. Please take time to review the revised document and be prepared for to vote during April’s chapter meeting.

  • The April chapter meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8, 3:30 PM, at the National Whitewater Center. We will start the meeting with a “behind the scenes” tour to be conducted by Kristina Kuehnel, Director of Operations. After the tour we will have a dinner/business meeting. Dinner will be available for individual purchase at the Center’s restaurant (The Eddy), and we will meet in one of the conference rooms.

  • CHHMunity opportunity: There is likely to be a community involvement opportunity with Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system. They have expressed a strong interest in receiving assistance from our members in conducting lab inspections / audits and other lab and chemical management related activities.

  • The 5013c application was revised and resubmitted with a response expected within 4-6 weeks.

  • National award criteria – CHMMs that are members of the ACMHMM may be eligible for the national Champions of Excellence award. If you have met five of the following criteria, please contact a board member so we may nominate you to receive this national recognition from the ACHMM.

  1. Make a personal contact to introduce the philosophy of CHMMs to a member of Academia, Industry, Business, or Government
  2. Make a presentation to a Non-CHMM related civic group about issues relevant to hazardous materials management. Presentation of a CHMM Overview course will NOT fulfill this requirement.

  4. Serve in a leadership role as Chapter/Academy officer, board member, committee chair, or committee member.
